This vineyard has brought Hollywood to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Film director Scott Hicks (of Shine fame) and his wife Kerry Heysen-Hicks planted these vines in 2000. It’s a breathtaking site, located right next door to Geoff Hardy’s Kuitpo Vineyard in the lower Mount Lofty Ranges (Geoff also manages the vines). It benefits from a cool, temperate climate, with temperatures 2.5C cooler on average than vineyards only 5km down the road, and considerably more rainfall than down the road too – 850mm per year compared to the McLaren Vale average of 650mm per year.
Mr. Riggs sources the less common varieties, Tempranillo and off-dry Germanic Ein Riese Riesling, from Yacca Paddock. Both varieties are on a single wire trellis, and shoots are vertically positioned to maximise light exposure to the grapes, which encourages even ripening. The soils may be ancient podzolic but the viticultural tactics are super modern, making this site perfect for these rather rare varieties.
