Monapilla Vineyard

This prime McLaren Vale Shiraz vineyard bore the first grapes to be made into a Mr. Riggs Shiraz. Father and son team Brian and Mark Beal work together on this dry-grown vineyard, which was planted in 1992 on a westerly aspect on dark loam soils over limestone. Located at the base of the Willunga Foothills in central McLaren Vale, this site is planted to a standard set-up of 3m rows (typical in the Vale), with the focus being very much on low yields of high-quality grapes. We don’t get a lot of fruit but what we do get is superb, all lovingly spur-pruned by hand to a vertical shoot position double cordon. This vineyard feels the heat but is tempered by the frequently fierce gully winds that sweep down the hills in the early evening. Monapilla fruit continues to be used in Mr. Riggs’ Shiraz as well as the Shiraz Viognier blend.
