Ask Ben Riggs to elaborate on his winemaking philosophy, and he’ll reply,
“I make wines that I love to drink”. Simple as that.
So what does Ben like to drink? Wines that express the essence of the
vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex yet with finesse, texture and elegance. Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with
a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.
Another long-held principle that leads the way for Ben is “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, Ben knows how to tease the best out of varieties in their natural home.
Ben’s viticultural involvement is also a big part of the grand plan. Some of Ben’s best mates are grape growers. They hang out together. A lot. If he wants to make exceptional wines, he knows he needs exceptional fruit. Ben is as passionate about the grape growing process, as he is the practice of winemaking.
A smaller version of our famous Gaffer.
A seamless blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, ‘Three Corner Jack’ combines rich, ripe, dark berry fruit and spice of Shiraz with the elegant, red berry fruit and structure that Cabernet offers.
The Truant is named after Ben's great-great-great grandfather. An influential wine, named after an influential man.
A perfectly balanced Cabernet, very worthy of its reputation.
A true expression of vineyards and vintage, Mr. Riggs Watervale Riesling 2017 represents precisely place and time.
Aiming for style and profile, the wine offers luscious layers of spice and dark berry fruits, balanced with a peppery undercurrent.
Please say hello to the empress of the Generation Series, Mrs. Viognier. She is complex and intriguing, delicate and seductive – much like Mr. Riggs’ better half, Annie.
None excites Ben more than old-world style Riesling... ‘A Giant’ among wines. Perhaps his favourite creation; crisp, sweet and fresh.
Gaffer [gaffer] noun: a colloquial term for "boss", "foreman or "old man", often used affectionately. A flavoursome, fruit-driven full-bodied Shiraz, The Gaffer is testament to the best of McLaren Vale and is assured to please the palate.
A supremely delicate ‘sticky’ with finesse and elegance, is definitely a wine Ben loves to drink. And he’d like others to come to the same sticky ending.
