Harvested on the 18th March, the wine was crushed and fermented in the traditional 2 tonne open fermenters. A series of plunging conducted 3 times a day over 7 days, the ferment was tasted twice daily and the desired program for the cap management was tailored to meet the desired effect. Following pressing at 2 Baume, the wine was stored in French and American oak, this was rack and returned from barrel every 3 months.

After 18 months the selected barrels were blended three months prior to bottling, which was conducted on the 26th February 2013.

The wine displays surprisingly spicy fragrance delicately perfumed bright fresh and elegant notes. Long lean spicy, blackberry and ripe red berries. A lingering perfume and spice crunch on the finish. A wine to cellar over the next 10-15 years, and the first Mr. Riggs to grace the McLaren Vale Scarce Earth program.

Vineyard Notes
Scarce Earth is a McLaren Vale initiative exploring and celebrating the geological climatic and soil diversity of the region, and we’re pleased to welcome the first Mr. Riggs to the prestigious Scarce Earth project. The 2011 Mr. Riggs Scarce Earth Shiraz is sourced from a single vineyard, the Western Block – Penny’s Hill located in the central foothills district of McLaren Vale, this block sits on the western side of the fault line on the Kurrajong formation (between 10,000 and 2.6 million years old) on sandy loam soil. The vineyard planted in 1992 is deliberately narrow planted for low yield, and on shallow loams soils over clay the site combines low water holding capacity, slight elevation from the surrounding valley floor (136m elevation) and the added benefit of the cooling gully winds from the hills. The rows run east to west over the block and trained as V.S.P with foliage wires.
