2017 Montepulciano d’Adelaide Six Pack

RRP: $180.00

94 Points

A splendidly generous montepulciano, red, purple and black fruits all in the contest, keeping tannins, oak and acidity all at bay. There may be some oak on the sideline, but it's largely irrelevant.

Gorgeously fruited and perfumed, the wine shows youthful fruit notes of Black Doris plum, cranberry, cocoa, roasted nut and floral on the nose. The palate delivers succulent fruit intensity together with silky mouthfeel and supple texture, leading to a lingering juicy finish. At its best: now to 2025.

Herb spiked red currant and cranberry scents and a lift of floral detail too. Palate is quite light on and delicate, easy to sip on, feathery with tannins and flighty with just ripe cherry flavours and a light dusting of spice. A blink and you’ll miss it kind of style, but really pretty and easy to like in its own way.

Mike Bennie, 2019

Big heavy bottle. Big heavy wine – though with a little more light/shade this year than usual. The cooler 2017 season no doubt helped. The core is dark and beefy but game and orange rind characters lend this some extra spark. Indeed as it breathes lavender and leather notes come to the fore, offering yet more interest. It’s tough and tannic in personality but it’s also pretty and complex. It has a fair bit to offer.

Campbell Mattinson, 2019

Vegan Freindly.

Whilst still a travelling consultant winemaker, Bens favourite region to visit was central and southern Italy. It was there that his love of Montepulciano began, and those memories have inspired him to make this Aussie version from fruit grown in the Adelaide Hills. Bright violet and rich red roll around the glass opaque, vibrant and alive with aromas of beef stock and crished mint. Hints of cinnamon spice right through a palate that graduates to both sweet tobacco and the cigar-box that held it; the finish lingers with vanilla straight from the pod. Only serious structure can contain this kitchen of flavour and it does so spectacularly.
